The internet has become an essential resource for family historians, and this talk will provide an introduction to the wide range of material available on the web. It will look in detail at the two most useful types of resource; free and commercial sites with genealogical sources, and discussion forums and pedigree databases for making contact with those who share your interests or ancestors. There are many benefits to using the internet, but you should also be aware of possible pitfalls.

Peter Christian has been researching his own genealogy for over 30 years and first put his family tree on the web in 1995. From 1996 to 2001 he was editor of the Society of Genealogists' computer journal 'Computers in Genealogy', and was also responsible for setting up the Society's first web site. For many years the regular internet columnist for Ancestors magazine, he is the author of a number of genealogy books, including 'The Genealogist's Internet', now in its fourth edition. He is a Fellow of the Society of Genealogists and one of the Trustees of Genuki.
